Legal Advice That Begins With the Documents, Not the Account Given
Employment contracts, commercial disagreements and unpaid invoices each have their own requirements. We work from what is written before we consider what to do about it.
Return to Home§ 01
What We Provide
Written assessments, reviewed documentation and clear explanations of the options available — including the option of doing nothing when that is the more sensible course. The work is carried out in English and is directed at companies operating in Japan who need substantive analysis rather than general information.
Each matter begins with the actual documents. What they say, what they leave open, and what that means in the current situation. That basis makes the advice more reliable and avoids the common problem of advice built on a favourable reading of the facts.
§ 02
How the Work Is Approached
A
Document First
The contract, the correspondence, the invoice — these are examined before any position is formed. What is written determines what is possible.
B
Written Output
Each engagement produces a written assessment. This gives you something to refer to, share internally or set aside and return to later.
C
Honest Scope
Where cost would likely exceed recovery, or the documentation is too weak to support a claim, that is stated plainly. The assessment includes weaknesses, not only strengths.
§ 03
The Process
Contact and initial exchange
Use the form below to describe the matter briefly. A member of the team will reply to confirm what documents are needed and whether the matter falls within the services offered.
Document review
The relevant documents are reviewed — contracts, correspondence, invoices or workplace rules depending on the matter. This review is the basis of everything that follows.
Written assessment delivered
A written assessment is prepared covering the position, the options available, and where relevant, a recommendation. Timelines vary by service but are set out clearly before the work begins.
Follow-on questions
Once the assessment is received, questions on the written content can be raised. The engagement does not end at delivery.
§ 04
Practice and Scope
Area
Employment
Contracts, work rules, fixed overtime arrangements and transfer provisions — the areas most often drafted without sufficient attention to how they hold up when challenged.
Area
Commercial
Disagreements with suppliers, customers and business partners. Assessment of position based on documents, with options for negotiation, mediation and formal proceedings.
Area
Debt Recovery
Unpaid commercial invoices. Documentation review, limitation periods, correspondence before formal steps, and a clear view of whether the cost of recovery is proportionate.
§ 05
Services Available
Three defined engagements, each with a written output. The scope and what is included are set out on each service page.
Service 01

Preparation and review of employment contracts, work rules and internal policies. Three to four weeks. A marked-up version with explanations and a note of provisions unlikely to hold.
